Why Seek a Learning Disability Assessment?

When a child or teen is bright, motivated, and putting in effort, but still falls behind academically, it can feel confusing and frustrating. A learning disability assessment can answer important questions about how your child learns best. There are many reasons families may seek an evaluation, such as: difficulty reading or understanding what’s read, trouble with spelling and grammar, challenges learning math, and falling behind despite tutoring and extra practice. Your child may also experience frustration, low confidence, or school avoidance. Identifying a learning disability helps explain the struggle and points toward solutions that work.

What to Expect

We take a strengths-based, comprehensive approach to learning disability assessments. Each evaluation is designed to capture the full picture of your child’s learning profile, including areas of challenge and the unique strengths that support resilience and growth. We use a combination of cognitive and academic testing, questionnaires from parents and teachers, and developmentally appropriate activities with your child or teen to understand how they process information, manage attention, and approach problem-solving. The assessment process also includes a detailed parent/caregiver interview to learn about your child’s history and current concerns, as well as screening for related issues such as ADHD, anxiety, or processing difficulties.

After the Assessment

Once testing is complete, we provide a feedback session and a thorough written report that clearly explains the results. This report should give you a clear understanding of whether your child meets criteria for a specific learning disability, as well as an explanation of your child’s unique learning style and strengths. You’ll leave with actionable recommendations tailored for both school (e.g., tutoring, IEP or 504 plan) and home, so your child can feel supported, confident, and equipped to succeed. We’ll also provide practical strategies to build confidence and reduce frustration at home and school. Our goal is to help families move forward with a roadmap that feels both realistic and hopeful.
