Does Early Reading Indicate Giftedness

Recently, a parent asked a question regarding their amazing 3-year-old that was already beginning to read. The parent wanted to know whether this means the child is gifted. Here is some insight I shared with them about early reading and giftedness.

Does Early Reading Indicate Giftedness

Have you visited GiftedTesting.com yet? It is an excellent resource for parents of gifted children as well as parents who suspect that their children may be gifted. Strengths and Solutions is a verified gifted testing provider, as listed on the website’s directory.  Recently, a parent asked a question regarding their amazing 3-year-old that was already beginning to read. The parent wanted to know whether this means the child is gifted. While you can read my full response by clicking this link, here is some of what I shared:

In regard to whether this means she is gifted, it is possible since she is showing these advanced abilities for her age. However, there is more criteria to consider when determining whether a child is gifted, including other components of intelligence not even associated with reading, such as nonverbal abilities of reasoning, memory, and processing speed.

Giftedness is a compilation of many traits, not just one. This parent is certainly on to something and it is very likely that their child is gifted. Should they decide to seek formal cognitive testing now, that can definitely help to confirm their suspicions. In order to enter a gifted program at school though, testing would have to be completed again at earliest Kindergarten level, because they won’t typically accept results any earlier than that. In the meantime, until grade school, I recommended to continue fostering the child’s strengths and abilities, and recommend you to do the same with your child’s strengths!
