Books for Overcoming Anxiety

Recently, a publisher reached out to me to get recommendations for books on overcoming anxiety. I gladly shared one of my favorite self-help books that I have found to be extremely helpful for clients. This book is an amazing tool that some therapists use in their sessions, but that can also be used independently.

Books for Overcoming Anxiety

Recently, a publisher reached out to me to get recommendations for books on overcoming anxiety. I gladly shared one of my favorite self-help books that I have found to be extremely helpful for clients. This book, Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life by Steven C. Hayes, is an amazing tool that some therapists use in their sessions, but that can also be used independently.  Here is my brief commentary on why I recommend it:

This is a self-help book written by a clinical psychologist, so that already helps with great credibility! The workbook walks you through the author’s widely-regarded Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) model, a form of therapy that actively teaches you ways to accept some of your most stressful thoughts and commit to a change in perspective/living.

It is helpful for anxiety because it presents a scientifically-based way of coping that literally brings you out of your mind through use of education about our most stressful thoughts, activities such as mindfulness, and psychological exercises to try when our typical problem-solving skills don’t work. As a psychologist, I’d recommend this book to anyone who can use an extra boost with overcoming their anxiety as well as depression and/or anger!

Other experts in the field recommended their favorite books for overcoming anxiety as well; the full list can be found here. If you are local to the South Florida area, I specialize in treating anxiety through solutions-focused mental health therapy for adults. Or, if you are a parent and believe that your child’s anxiety is interfering with ability to function in school/work, please contact us for more information on whether a psychological assessment would be a good fit for you.
